The Real Seattle Seven! The Best Local Bands of Bumbershoot 2011

As one of the very best music cities in the history of the universe, it should come as little surprise that there is a rich selection of great local bands playing Bumbershoot this year. While some of our favorites like BOAT, The Globes and The Moondoggies are noticeably absent, there are a ton of other great local acts worthy of your attention. Here are our top recommendations:

Pickwick (Saturday 6:00 @ EMP Level 3)

Front and center of the funk/soul revival, these former folk softies might just be Seattle’s best live band at the moment. The band encourages you to bring your own shakers/tambourines to the show.

My Goodness (Monday 2:00 @ Exhibition Hall)

In terms of raw talent, you’d be hard pressed to do better than this power duo. Seeing the band live is akin to “a tornado fighting it’s way outta a rock band” according to our friend Mike Johnston.

Tomten (Saturday 12:00 @ EMP Level 3)

The young, self-described “baroque pop” band pumps out guitar + organ-driven tunes that are heavy on The Kinks’ influence. And we like it that way.

Lemolo (Monday 4:30 @ EMP Level 3)

With skillful keyboard skills and haunting yet playful vocals there’s little wonder why this female duo is the toast of the town.

Ravenna Woods (Monday 7:30 @ EMP Level 3)

Seattle’s best percussive-acoustic trio will have you dancing, swaying or stomping by their second song.

Legendary Oaks (Monday 12:30 @ Starbucks)

The best guitar plus violin American act you’ll hear all weekend.

Shabazz Palaces (Saturday 5:45 @ Fisher Green)

Last but not least, the enigmatic collective behind Black Up? Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of the most lauded albums of the year in person.

While we could go on and on, we’ll cap this list at seven for space reasons. That being said, additional noteworthy local bands certainly worthy of your attention are Campfire OK (Saturday 12:00 @ Fountain Lawn), Brite Futures (Saturday 1:15 @ Mainstage), Kris Orlowski & The Passenger String Quartet (Saturday 1:30 @ EMP Level 3), Shelby Earl (Saturday 3:00 @ EMP Level 3), Minus the Bear (Saturday 9:15 @ Fisher Green), The Lonely Forest (Sunday 1:30 @ Mainstage), Whalebones (Sunday 1:30 @ Fountain Lawn), Motopony (Monday 12:00 @ Fountain Lawn), Fly Moon Royalty (Monday 12:45 @ Fisher Green) among MANY others.
