R&B Revival Rock at Its Best: Nick Waterhouse at Barboza Tonight

As we’ve mentioned before, we’re big fans of the soul, funk and R&B revival that’s been taking place over the past few years. From Seattle’s Pickwick to Austin’s Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears to mainstream acts like L.A.’s Fitz and the Tantrums to all the Sharon Joneses and Mayer Hawthornes in between, there’s been a great selection of throwback bands with a modern twist. Today’s recommended show is yet another great act who taps into that rich spectrum of R&B-infused rock that flourished over half a century ago.

Nick Waterhouse
is a 25-year-old musician from L.A. who plays retro-inspired music with the youthful energy that only a young man (or woman) could breathe into it. As A.V. Club aptly puts it the “greasiness of Waterhouse’s music offers a shocking juxtaposition with his buttoned-up Buddy Holly façade, most of all on the hard-cut rock groove of ‘Some Place.’ Waterhouse might look like a guy who’d rather offer up cookies and milk than a serving of attitude, but this song is capable of suspending disbelief for three and a half minutes.”

Spend some time with his music below and head over to Neumos Jr. to take in the live experience for yourself.

5/29 – Nick Waterhouse @ Barboza, Doors at 8pm, $10 ADV
