Canadian Musical Masterminds Take Over Key Arena This Weekend: Leonard Cohen & Neil Young

When you think of fundamental folk rock in America, it isn’t often you realize the artists behind it aren’t actually from our country. Two such musical geniuses are in town this weekend, both boasting Canadian citizenship.

Canada’s Leonard Cohen, known perhaps most famously for his song “Hallelujah” which has been covered by the likes of Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, and Bon Jovi to name a few, has been a poetic powerhouse since the 1960s. Leonard, know for being somewhat mysterious, has endured as a critical darling and a favorite of fellow musicians for decades. He’s also well known for his books of poetry and novels, all of which are woven together with themes of love, lust, religion and politics.

Neil Young, a.k.a. The Godfather of Grunge, wrote some of America’s staples (think “Heart of Gold” and “Rockin’ in the Free World”), and while he lives in California, he still retains his Canadian passport. A staunch supporter of environmental efforts, Farm Aid, education and other civil rights, Neil’s music is both poetic and poignant. With his distinct, high-pitched vocals, talented harmonica work and impressive skills with a guitar, Neil’s music is admired by young and old alike. His popularity with the younger generation has been helped by some of his musical collaborations and his support of Conan O’Brien.

Shuffle Over to Key Arena for Tonight’s Pick: LMFAO

As much as we love well thought out, precise, serious music from true artists, we can’t lie. Sometimes we also just like something fun, mindless and easy to dance to. Lately, our answer to that feeling has been LMFAO.

From turning shufflin’ into a dance crazy to being sexy and knowing it, Redfoo and SkyBlu sure know how to write electro-pop anthems that make it hard to sit still. In fact, kids of all ages love LMFAO – even Elmo covered one of their songs. And frankly, if the zombie apocalypse actually turns out to be a hipster dance party, we’d be ok with that.

Get ready to party rock like a G6 with openers Far East Movement, too.

6/2 LMFAO / Far East Movement @ Key Arena :: 7:00 p.m. :: Tickets are $50 – $144 :: All Ages
